Carles Jou, who spent 14 years at Goldman Sachs, has joined Citigroup as a managing director in the loans and leveraged finance unit. His focus will be on financial sponsor clients in Europe.
The hiring of Jou reflects Citigroup’s commitment to growing its leveraged finance unit, described in a memo from Uday Malhotra and Paul Gibbs, co-heads of loans and leveraged finance at Citigroup in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, as a significant opportunity for expansion.
Citigroup has been strategically expanding its dealmaking activities, with leveraged finance being one of the areas targeted for growth.

This hiring comes after Citigroup’s recent appointment of Julia Frank, who joined as a managing director in the leveraged loans and finance unit.
Frank, previously from Credit Suisse, is based in Frankfurt. Uday Malhotra, who joined Citigroup from Bank of America in October 2022, brings valuable experience in EMEA leveraged finance origination from his time at Goldman Sachs.
Citigroup’s move to strengthen its leveraged finance team with experienced hires from Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse demonstrates its dedication to expanding its foothold in this market segment.
These strategic hires are expected to bolster Citigroup’s capabilities in serving financial sponsor clients in Europe and contribute to the firm’s broader plans for growth in dealmaking activities.
